What name should we give to the reclamation site?
At a recent public meeting it was suggested that instead of calling the site of the reclamation “the Douglas Creek Estates” or even using another English word to refer to “the site,” that we rename it in one of our own languages.
Since the site is now basically bare of any vegetation and the creek has been channeled into a concrete bed, our nomination for a new Kanyen'keha ("Mohawk") name is based on the lone tree (a hickory) growing on the site near the Onondaga Silver Pines camp on 6th Line. We propose that the site be known now as Tsyonennohkarà:ke (the place of the single hickory tree). What's your suggestion?
